Picture Dump 4 - Suzhou: Venice of the East

After Hangzhou we took a bullet train 300 kilometers north to the canal town of Suzhou. It was cold and rainy the whole time!

The historic canal district was where we spent most of our time

As did about 5,000,000 other new friends

Not sure if this was a joke or what

Ancient city gate

The other thing this city is known for is its Ming Dynasty gardens. A lot of these are 400 and 500 years old. They were still pretty cool even if they weren't very flowery

My favorite thing about Suzhou. The name in Chinese is "Ice Empress"

At our hostel. This is China in a nutshell. Someone was too lazy to actually throw their chicken away. They clearly knew what they were supposed to do, but didn't really care. Meanwhile it just sat there for 3 days until I cleaned it up because no one else wanted to be responsible for it.

This is a rich person's sedan. They'd use their slaves/servants and make them carry them around in this!

This garden was tooooo crowded

But they had some neat bonzai trees that Laura liked... a lot...

Our hostel had this dopey cat! We could play with it for free!

Visiting an ancient pagoda. Unlike most of the pagodas in China, this one hasn't been rebuilt or touched up at all. Aside from a few structural supports to slow down it's lean/fall, this is 100% the original 1,000 year old tower.

I can't handle how many dumplings this is

Back at the train station. Let's go to Shanghai!
