Photo Dump Round 2: Thailand

Alright folks I'm back in business. Our month-long holiday is sadly over. I'll be making several posts over the next several days to chronicle all of it.

Let's do dessert first, shall we? I'll post all the pictures from the second half of the month today and tomorrow, and then after that I'll try to put it into words.

So.... after spending a week in Sanya, Saigon, Phnom Penh, and Siem Reap, we spent a week in Thailand

After we walked across the border in Poipet, Cambodia, we found ourselves in Aranyaprathet, Thailand. It was a tiny little town with absolutely nothing in it but a train station. This is that train station.

Our first taste of the Thai language.

Train's here. Let's go!

Rural Thailand by train.

Sunset. Almost in Bangkok.

We spent the first few days in Bangbon, the outermost district of Bangkok. This is where my friend Rebecca lives. Bangbon is the Gratiot Avenue of Thailand.

But they had a fruit market! We bought some Durian immediately!

Durian gets a bad wrap because it smells horrible. The taste is fascinating though. Like an expensive stinky cheese mixed with onions. Would go great on toast.

Washed it down with some coconut water

At dinner that night, I ate some mealworms. These are my new favorite bug!

Temples in the distance

We moved on to a hostel located more centrally in downtown. Whoops! The hostel was on gay street!

A Thai temple. Buddhist with some Hindu flairs.

Such as the holy cows.

A long walk through Chinatown, one of the largest and oldest Chinatowns in the world. I guess we missed China?

An afternoon at Wat Pho, a huge royal temple complex in Bangkok.

One of the largest "reclining Buddhas" lives here. He was so big!

Feet bigger than mine.

Danger around every turn!

These were the soles of his feet.

We ran into our buddy Leon in Bangkok. He was so happy to have a real milkshake. That's right the milkshakes at the Mexican Restaurant in Bangkok are the best in Asia.

Soi Cowboy: Once the most notorious street in the city and the center of the red light district. Now it's just sort of like Disneyworld.

Welcome to Thailand

We took a daytrip down to Phuket, an island in the south of Thailand. This was a lot more... touristy. Ugh....

But the street Pad Thai was still really good!

And the view was awesome.

Sunset on Patong beach.

Up at the crack of dawn the next day for a snorkel trip. Don't forget your coffee!

We took a boat out from Phuket into the Indian ocean.

Bye Phuket

Hello Ko Phi Phi island!

This island had monkeys

Lunch at a resort

This cave is where the majority of the world's nests are harvested for the making of Bird's Nest Soup. It's one of the most expensive dishes you can buy, and a favorite of the Chinese.

I didn't have an underwater camera, so no fish pictures...

Back to Bangkok for one more weekend. We stayed in this cool hostel

An afternoon at the Jim Thompson House. Jim Thompson was an American who moved to Thailand and became a millionaire in the silk industry. His former house is now a museum of his life and also of Thai culture. This chunk of wood behind Laura was used as a press onto silk patterns and onto vases and things.

This statue is the most valuable piece at the house. It's thousands of years old!

What'cha thinkin about? Oh, just knife things...

Sunset over the Temple of Dawn

Later that night we accidentally stumbled onto a movie premiere with John Cusack, Jackie Chan, and Adrian Brody

A night out on Khao San Road. This bar has the best name.

ALSO BANGKOK HAD A GARRETTS POPCORN YOU GUYS

Back home to Foshan for a minute. The town was almost completely empty!

Look how empty this subway was! Everyone had left town to go back to their "ancestral homes" for Chinese New Year

Okay more posts later!
